Zust Earns Big Ten Weekly Honor

March 22, 2010

IOWA CITY, IA – University of Iowa senior Amanda Zust has been named Big Ten Softball Pitcher of the Week. Zust earned the conference’s weekly award after tossing a no-hitter Sunday in the Hawkeyes’ 2010 home opener against South Dakota. It is her first career Big Ten weekly honor.

Iowa’s senior ace faced just two batters over the minimum and struck out a season-high eight batters in the 8-0 win over South Dakota. It was her second career no-hitter. She is now one of just five Hawkeyes to record multiple no-hitters in their career. That list includes Brittany Weil (5), Debbie Bilbao (4) Lisa Birocci (2) and Kristi Hanks (2).

In four starts last week, all Hawkeye wins, Zust allowed just two earned runs in 26 innings to compile a 0.54 ERA. She struck out 25 while tossing three complete games.

The Hawkeyes have won five of their last six games and will complete their preseason non-conference schedule by hosting Illinois State Wednesday at 4 p.m. Iowa opens the Big Ten season this weekend at Michigan State.
