COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA — Former Hawkeyes Mike Zadick (60 kg/132 lbs) and Brent Metcalf (66 kg/145.5 lbs) both earned berths to the 2010 World Championships in Moscow, Russia, in September by winning individual titles at this weekend’s U.S. World Team Trials in Council Bluffs.
Zadick, a past World silver medalist and Iowa’s volunteer assistant wrestling coach, made his third U.S. World team by sweeping 2009 World Team member Shawn Bunch in the 60 kg/132 lb freestyle finals. Bunch had beaten Zadick in the U.S. Open.
“It’s a really great feeling to be back on the World Team,” Zadick said. “The training in Iowa City has been top-notch. I’ve been on track with everything all year, and now I’m ready to go to Moscow and win a World Championship.”
The Zadick-Bunch matches were among the best of the night as they engaged in a series of wild scrambles as they battled for points. Zadick made World Teams in 2006 and 2007 before wrestling in the 2008 Olympics. The relentless Zadick lost the first period in both matches before storming back to prevail.
Metcalf prevailed in one of the most exciting matches of the night when he downed former Hawkeye strength and conditioning coach Jared Frayer in three matches to win the freestyle finals at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.
Metcalf won the final match in the third period from the defensive position on a controversial call in the clinch. Metcalf, who won his second NCAA title for Iowa less than two months ago in Omaha, makes his first World Team.
“It’s what you aim for – a chance to take on the best wrestlers in the World,” Metcalf said. “That’s what I’m shooting for, World and Olympic titles. I’m ready to take the next step.”
Metcalf beat former Hawkeye assistant coach, Olympian and past World fifth-place finisher Doug Schwab in the semifinals of the Challenge Tournament before downing U.S. Open runner-up Josh Churella in the Challenge finals. Schwab came back to place third in the Challenge Tournament.
