THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa field hockey team returns home to Iowa City this weekend. The Black and Gold will host Ball State Saturday. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Grant Field. Admission is free.
SCOUTING BALL STATE
Ball State is 3-1 and is receiving votes in the latest Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. They have defeated Longwood (3-2), Robert Morris (5-0) and St. Louis (4-0), and lost to Appalachian State (4-3). They are 1-1 away from home and are 1-1 in overtime contests. Ball State will travel to Big Ten rival Northwestern Friday before venturing to Iowa City. The Cardinals are coached by Beth Maddox. The former Old Dominion standout is in her first season at the helm of the program.
SERIES HISTORY
Iowa is 18-2 all-time against Ball State, including winning the last four. Iowa last faced the Cardinals in 2005, winning at home, 6-1. The Hawkeyes last played at Ball State in 2001, claiming a 1-0 victory.
IN THE RANKINGS
The Hawkeyes (1-5) are receiving votes in the latest Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. Iowa will play, or has played, seven of the current NFHCA top 20 this season. In addition, the Hawkeyes will face or have faced five of the teams receiving votes in the latest poll. The Big Ten Conference currently has three teams ranked in the top 20. Michigan State sits at fifth in the latest rankings. Joining the Spartans is Ohio State (No. 10) and Penn State (No. 15). All Big Ten teams are at least receiving votes. Northwestern, Indiana, Michigan and the Hawkeyes all received votes.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hawkeyes traveled to Kent, OH over the weekend. Saturday, Iowa fell to No. 19 Stanford in overtime, 2-1, at Murphy-Mellis Field. It marked the second straight year Iowa and Stanford had battled to overtime. Sunday, the Hawkeyes lost at Kent State, 3-1. Sophomore Jessica Barnett recorded her fourth goal of the season during the contest.
IOWA AT GRANT FIELD
2010 marks the sixth year Iowa has played on the new Grant Field. Iowa owns an overall home record of 126-38, a conference record of 57-19 at home and an 11-2 record in NCAA Tournament games played in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes have gone undefeated on their home field in six separate seasons, including a 40-game home winning streak. Iowa is 1-1 at home this season, falling to Miami (OH) (5-1) and downing Brown (5-0).
STAT LEADERS
Sophomore Jessica Barnett leads the Hawkeyes in a number of statistical categories. Barnett leads the team with 23 shots, good for sixth in the Big Ten. She also leads the team with eight points and four goals. The eight points rank ninth in the conference and the goals rank seventh in overall goals scored. The four goals in six games played gives Barnett an average of 0.67 goals per game, good for fifth in the Big Ten. Sophomore Geena Lesiak has recorded three assists. The three helpers tie for sixth in total assists and the 0.5 assists per game average ties her for seventh. Additionally, sophomore Kathleen McGraw ranks second in the conference with 30 saves. McGraw is tied for second in the league with one shutout.
HAWKEYE NEWCOMERS
The Black and Gold feature seven freshmen on the 2010 roster. Kelsey Mitchell (Berlin, NJ), who holds the high school record for career goals scored in the state of New Jersey, and Kim Scraper (West Vancouver, Canada) have seen action on the forward line. Both have recorded their first career collegiate goals. Marike Stribos (Brussels, Belgium) and Aubrey Coleman (Mickleton, NJ) have both seen significant minutes in the Hawkeye midfield. In addition, Niki Schultheis (Hamburg, Germany), Danielle Peirson (Conestoga, Pa) and Karli Johansen (North Vancouver, Canada) have helped solidify the backfield.
HAWKEYES ON THE BIG TEN NETWORK
The Iowa field hockey team will appear on the Big Ten Network twice during the 2010 regular season. Iowa’s match against Big Ten rival Michigan will be shown live Oct. 10 at Grant Field at noon. The Hawkeyes’ match at home against Ohio State will also be shown. It will be televised as a same day tape delay at 5 p.m. Both times are central. In addition, coverage of the Big Ten Tournament can be seen on the Network. Iowa has won three of the last four tournaments.
BEGLIN NAMED TO 22ND IOWA HALL OF FAME CLASS
Former Hawkeye Head Coach Beth Beglin is one of six individuals who was inducted by the National Iowa Varsity Club and the University of Iowa Athletics Department into the Athletics Hall of Fame. A member of the 22nd class, she was honored Sept. 5 at Grant Field at the conclusion of Iowa’s game against Miami (OH).
Beglin was the Iowa field hockey coach from 1988 to 1999. She led the Hawkeyes to 10 NCAA Tournaments, including seven Final Fours and runner-up finishes in 1988 and 1992. Beglin guided the Black and Gold to seven conference championships and the 1994 Big Ten Tournament Championship. She was named conference coach of the year seven times, Midwest Region Coach of the Year five times and National Coach of the Year in 1992. In addition, Beglin coached 39 All-Americans, 67 All-Conference selections, 16 U.S. National Team members and two members of the 1996 USA Olympic Team.
