Two Hawkeyes Earn Preseason Recognition

IOWA City, Iowa – University of Iowa men’s gymnasts Javier Balboa Gonzalez and Lance Alberhasky have been named to the 2011 Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch list. Gonzalez and Alberhasky were two of 12 gymnasts picked for the watch list.

Gonzalez is a junior from Monterrey, Mexico, and is in his first season as a Hawkeye. He spent the last two years at the Instituto Technologico y de Estudios Superiores. At the 2010 Mexico Nationals, Gonzalez placed first on parallel bars and second in the all-around. In 2009, he earned a first place finish on rings. Gonzalez also placed eighth on rings and 12th in the all-around at the 2008 Pan American Event Championships.

Alberhasky is a freshman from Iowa City who attended Regina High School. He was a three-time Academic All-American in high school and was also a three-time Region 4 team member. He was named Gymnast of the Year in the state of Iowa after placing first on floor exercise, rings, vault, parallel bars and all-around at the state meet. Alberhasky also placed third on high bar at the Junior Olympic Nationals.

First year head coach JD Reive and the Hawkeyes open the season Jan. 15 in Chicago at the Windy City Invitational.
