Georgia State Tops Hawkeyes, 10-6

STARKVILLE, Miss. – – Georgia State pounded out 16 singles en route to a 10-6 win over the Iowa baseball team Friday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field on the Mississippi State campus.

Iowa (1-5) jumped on the board first, plating four runs on four singles in the top of the second frame. Taylor Zeutenhorst, Andrew Host, Kurt Lee recorded back-to-back-to-back RBI singles. Later, Mike McQuillan collected Iowa’s fourth RBI single of the inning to stretch the Hawkeyes’ advantage to 4-0. McQuillan finished the contest with two of Iowa’s eight hits, including his first double of the year.

Georgia State (9-1) cut the deficit to 4-1 with an RBI single in the bottom of the second off Hawkeye sophomore starter Ricky Sandquist. The Panthers erupted for six runs on six singles in the bottom of the fourth to claim a 7-4 advantage.

Georgia State added to its lead with a single run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to increase its cushion to 10-4.

Sandquist threw three innings, allowing four runs on six hits. Tim Fangman relieved Sandquist in the fourth inning and got the loss. The junior threw three and two third innings, allowing six runs on nine hits, while striking out three.

The Hawkeyes scored their final two runs in the top of the ninth. Andrew Ewing and Chett Zeise led off with back-to-back singles. Later in the frame, Ewing and Zeise both scored on wild pitches.

Justin Malone earned his third victory of the season for Georgia State, allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits in six innings of work.

Iowa returns to action later today when it plays Mississippi State at approximately 2:30 p.m.
