LUBBOCK, Texas — The Iowa baseball team fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Monday, 5-4. The game was played at Dan Law Field on the campus of Texas Tech.

The Islanders (12-7) tallied four runs in the first inning off Hawkeye starter Ricky Sandquist and held on for the victory.

Trailing 4-0 in the fourth, Mike McQuillan led off the inning with a double to center. The double to center extended McQuillan’s hitting streak to eight games. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, the senior scored on a sac fly by fellow senior Tyson Blaser, making the score 4-1.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi added an insurance run in the fifth, on an RBI single to right.

Iowa (5-8) answered in the seventh with a two-out rally. The Hawkeyes plated three runs to make the score 5-4. Junior Chett Zeise doubled to right center with two down. Freshman Taylor Zeutenhorst reached on a throwing error, moving Zeise to third base. Junior Kasey Carling collected his second single of the game with a smash up the middle, scoring Zeise and moving Zeutenhorst to third. Senior Trevor Willis followed that up with a triple to right, scoring both runners.

Despite the seventh inning rally, the Iowa offense was unable to push across a run in the eighth or ninth, giving the Islanders the one-run victory.

Sandquist took the loss for the Hawkeyes. The sophomore went a career-long five and two-thirds, giving up five earned runs on 10 hits. Tim Fangman pitched two and a third scoreless innings in relief.

Brett Carnline picked up the win for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, going six and two-thirds. He gave up one earned run on only four hits.

Iowa returns to action Thursday when it travels to San Antonio, Texas, for the Notre Dame Tournament. The Hawkeyes will play Notre Dame at 4 p.m.
