SAN ANTONIO, Texas — The University of Iowa baseball team dropped the night cap of its doubleheader, 9-1, against Gonzaga Friday night at Wolff Stadium. Four Bulldog pitchers limited the Hawkeye bats to a pair of hits in the contest.

Gonzaga plated the game’s first run in its opening at-bat, but Iowa answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame. Trevor Willis drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice and stole third. Zach McCool then drove in the run with a suicide squeeze, tying the score at one.

The Bulldogs regained the advantage with two scores in the third inning. Billy Moon hit an RBI double down the right field line to plate Eric Lane, and then scored on a Royce Bolinger single through the left side. Gonzaga added to its lead, plating three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Ryan Carpenter picked up his first victory of the season for the Bulldogs, scattering two hits in six innings and striking out eight.

Iowa’s Matt Dermody suffered the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings.

The Hawkeyes (7-9) close out its spring break trip Saturday against Gonzaga beginning at 4 p.m.
