THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa women’s tennis team will play its final two home matches of the season this weekend at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The Hawkeyes will host two Big Ten teams hailing from the state of Michigan, as they will play Friday at 5 p.m. (CST) against Michigan State (12-8 overall, 1-6 Big Ten) before facing No. 10 Michigan (17-3 overall, 7-0 Big Ten) Sunday at 11 a.m. (CST). MOVING ON UP
Junior Sonja Molnar and senior Jessica Young moved up 22 spots in the ITA doubles rankings. The pair jumped from No. 46 to No. 24 after topping Northwestern’s seventh ranked duo of Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton, 8-6, on April 9. Molnar and Young’s 10-5 dual match record includes a 4-3 mark against ranked opponents. The pair will have an opportunity to earn two more wins against nationally ranked opponents this weekend, as Amy Barton and Marina Bohrer of Michigan State are ranked No. 27 by the ITA, while Michigan claims the country’s No. 9 tandem, Brooke Bolender and Denise Muresan.
QUICK AND EASY
Before falling to Northwestern’s Maria Mosolova, the 16th ranked player in the country, junior Sonja Molnar had won four straight matches in straight sets. All four of the wins came against Big Ten opponents, including Indiana’s Leslie Hureau, the No. 78 player in the country at the time. Molnar, ranked No. 116 by the ITA, is 12-5 in dual matches and 2-1 against nationally ranked opponents.
FIRST OF MANY
Freshman Christina Harazin collected the first win of her career against a nationally ranked opponent on April 9 against Northwestern. In her first career match against a nationally ranked opponent, Harazin topped No. 50 Brittany Wowchuk 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 while playing at the No. 4 position for the first time this season. Harazin is 7-7 during dual matches. Harazin will have a chance to earn win No. 2 on Sunday, as Michigan boasts four individuals ranked in the top 110 of the ITA poll.
SAYING GOODBYE
Three Hawkeye seniors, Alexis Dorr, Lynne Poggensee-Wei and Jessica Young, will play their final two home matches of their careers this weekend. The trio came to Iowa City in 2007 considered as the No. 7 recruiting class in the country. They have contributed to 42 Hawkeye victories and a 2009-10 NCAA Tournament appearance.
THE TOP AND THE BOTTOM
The Hawkeyes will face the bottom and the top of the Big Ten this weekend. Michigan State, 1-6 in conference, is currently last in the Big Ten standings, while Michigan, 7-0, is one of two teams still undefeated in conference play and is currently in a first place tie with No. 15 Northwestern. Michigan will play at Illinois Friday before playing Iowa. The Hawkeyes, 2-4, are currently in a sixth-place tie with Wisconsin.
