Gable on the Big Screen

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Two months after his Gable’s Gold retirement celebration, former Hawkeye head wrestling coach Dan Gable is ready for the big screen.

The documentary “Freestyle: The Victories of Dan Gable” will be shown August 28 at 6 p.m. at the Englert Theatre in the final act of the Landlocked Film Festival. Gable will make a personal appearance at the fifth annual festival and address the audience with producer David L. Gould and director Kevin Kelley following the screening.

The documentary features early footage of Gable’s life and a behind-the-scenes look into the 1997 NCAA championship season – Gable’s final year as Iowa’s head coach. The Landlocked Film Festival says the documentary presents an inside look into the unique culture of wrestling and a rare view of this legendary sports figure.

Kenneth Turan, long-time film critic at the Los Angeles Times, says this documentary “opens a window on a man who was as fierce a competitor as modern sport has seen.”

The Landlocked Film Festival runs from August 25-28 and offers narrative, documentary, artistic and animated films from Iowa to Iran, from Uganda to the UK, and even further afield.

Gable’s appearance at the event precedes “FRY Fest, a Celebration of all that is Hawkeye.” The third annual FRY Fest, presented by The Eastern Iowa Airport, will take place on Sept. 2 and pay tribute to Gable. The FRY Fest event will feature a very special production of ‘This Is Your Life, Dan Gable.’
