ATHENS, Ohio — The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated Ohio, 2-1, Sunday at Pruitt Field in Athens, Ohio. Iowa, ranked 17th nationally, is 10-3 overall and 2-2 in Big Ten play. The win ends Ohio’s (11-3) five-game win streak.

“Merty (Kathleen McGraw) had another great game,” said head coach Tracey Griesbaum. “We will continue to work hard and prepare for Indiana.”

The home team struck first. Marissa Higgins scored her second goal of the season at the 26:58 mark to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. Cathryn Altdoerffer was credited with the assist.

The visitors answered moments later. Sophomore Kim Scraper tallied her team-leading 16th goal of the season at the 28:07 mark to tie the game. The contest was tied at the half, 1-1.

The Hawkeyes took the lead in the 54th minute on a corner. Junior Jessica Barnett tallied her third goal in the last two games, giving Iowa the 2-1 advantage. Junior Geena Lesiak was credited with the assist.

Iowa’s defense held off the Bobcats in the remaining minutes, giving the Hawkeyes the 2-1 victory.

Junior goalkeeper Kathleen McGraw recorded 10 saves to lead the Iowa defense. Barnett added a defensive save.

Iowa (10-3, 2-2) continues action next weekend when it hosts Indiana in its final home game. The Hawkeyes will face the Hoosiers Saturday at 1 p.m. at Grant Field. Iowa will honor senior Becca Spengler. Admission is free.
