Molnar Advances to Quarterfinals

TULSA, Okla. – – University of Iowa senior Sonja Molnar advanced to the quarterfinals of singles at the ITA Central Region Championships on Saturday after beating Minnesota’s Julia Courter at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.

Molnar topped Courter, 6-0, 6-1, in the Big Ten foes first career meeting. Molnar improved to 3-0 at the event. All three victories have been straight-set decisions. Molnar, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, will face the winner of Tulsa’s Anastasia Erofeeva versus Whitney Ritchie of Oklahoma on Sunday. Erofeeva was ranked No. 123 in the ITA preseason poll. Molnar, ranked No. 65 in the ITA preseason poll, owns a 9-1 singles record this season.

Molnar also teamed with freshman Shelby Talcott in doubles. The duo defeated Beaulieu/Enrique of host Tulsa, 8-2, before being eliminated in the quarterfinals by Tulsa’s Erofeeva/Szatkowska, 9-7. Molnar and Talcott are 6-1 when paired this season.
