Iowa Falls at Austin Peay in 10 innings

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Iowa baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision at Austin Peay in 10 innings Saturday. The game was played at Raymond C. Hand Park as part of the Austin Peay/Riverview Inn Classic.

Austin Peay (6-3) struck first with a single run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly.

The Hawkeyes (2-6) answered in the top of the fifth. Freshman designated hitter Ryan Rumpf evened up the score at 1-1 with an RBI ground out.

Iowa took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth. Freshman Jake Mangler singled with the bases loaded, scoring fellow freshman Jake Yacinich from third.

In the top of the seventh, the visiting Hawkeyes extended their lead to 3-1 on an RBI double down the right field line by senior Sean Flanagan. Sophomore Taylor Zeutenhorst scored on the play.

The Governors used a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the Iowa lead to 3-2. In the eighth, Austin Peay tallied a single run to tie the score at 3-3, ultimately sending the game to extra innings.

In the bottom of the 10th, Austin Peay’s Jordan Hankins singled to left with runners at first and third and one out to give the Governors the 4-3 victory.

Matt Dermody started and took a no-decision. The junior pitched six and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs while scattering five hits. He struck out seven, one shy of his career high. Seniors Tim Fangman, Nick Brown and Patrick Lala saw action out of the Iowa bullpen. Brown pitched an inning and two-thirds in his first outing of the season, allowing no runs. He struck out two. Lala took the loss, allowing an unearned run in one-third of an inning.

Austin Peay’s Tyler Rogers recorded the win. He pitched two and two-thirds, allowing no runs on zero hits.

Iowa concludes action Sunday in the Austin Peay/River View Inn Classic when it plays Youngstown State. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. (CT).
