A 9-Tool Player

Aug. 30, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Former University of Iowa baseball player Justin Toole displayed his versatility by playing all nine positions for the Carolina Mudcats on Aug. 25.

Toole began the game in right field, moving across the outfield over the first three innings. He made his way to the infield in the fourth, starting at first base and reaching third by the seventh. He caught the eighth and finished the night on the mound.

Toole went 1-for-4 at the plate and had a pair of strikeouts during his inning of relief.

The last time this happened in the minor leagues, teammates Kevin Higgins and Keith Lockhart both did it in the same game for the Triple-A Las Vegas in 1994. Only four players have ever played all nine positions in a major league game, none since Shane Halter for the Detroit Tigers in October 2000.
