Hawkeyes Conclude Play at ITA All-Americans

Sept. 30, 2012

LOS ANGELES — University of Iowa women’s tennis players Shelby Talcott and Ruth Seaborne competed at the ITA All American Championships this weekend.

The No. 58 ranked Hawkeye duo opened up tournament play Saturday at UCLA’s Sycamore Tennis Courts. Talcott and Seaborne were defeated by Lauren McHale and Zoe DeBruycker of North Carolina, 8-3, in the first round of the pre-qualifying bracket.

Seaborne went on to compete in three singles matches, advancing to the doorstep of the ITA qualifying tournament. After dropping the first set against No. 109 Jordaan Sanford of Baylor in the opening round, she rallied for a 6-4 win in set two and clinched the match with a 6-3 victory in the rubber set. She then defeated Jessica Wacnik of Boston College, 7-5, 6-4 on Saturday night to earn a shot at the qualifying bracket.

Seaborne was stopped one set short of the qualifying bracket by Olivia Janowicz of Florida. The players split the first two sets, but Janowicz topped Seaborne in the final set to earn a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 victory.

“Overall it was a good weekend of tennis,” said assistant coach Courtney Nagle. “We saw some high quality opponents in both singles and doubles. I was very pleased with Ruth’s singles performances over the past two days. She played three matches and came out with two good wins. The third one came up a little short, losing in three sets to a tough opponent.”

The Hawkeyes will return to action Oct. 12 at the Wildcat Invitational. The three-day tournament will be hosted by Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
