EVANSTON, Ill. — The University of Iowa women’s soccer team was defeated by Northwestern on Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field, as Iowa was dealt its fourth one-goal loss of the season. The Wildcats (6-10-2, 2-8-0) beat Iowa (11-5-2, 2-5-3), 1-0, as a goal in the 85th minute provided the difference.

Iowa held a 12-11 advantage in shots and a 4-3 lead in corner kicks. Junior Ashley Catrell had four shots and two shots on goal. Freshmen goalkeepers Meg Goodson and Hannah Clark combined to make four saves.

“Our effort level was good, and we worked hard out there again,” said Iowa head coach Ron Rainey. “We’ve just came up a bit short in these past few contests, and we’ll need to have a short memory for this last week of practice before the final regular season match.”

The Iowa offense was quick out of the gates, as a header off a corner kick from sophomore defender Melanie Pickert went just wide left 54 seconds into the contest. Sophomore Cloe Lacasse ripped a threatening shot from outside of the box in the 10th minute, but goalkeeper Anna Cassell made the save. Iowa’s closest scoring opportunity came in the 46th minute, as a hard-hit shot from Lacasse missed the cross bar by a slim margin.

Iowa’s defense was in its usual shape for almost the entire contest, holding the Wildcats to just five shots on goal. Northwestern would crack the stalemate in the 85th minute courtesy of a Niki Sebo header. The Wildcats moved the ball to the left flank, where Jennifer Korn crossed the ball back into the middle of the box as Sebo headed the ball to net for her fourth goal of the season.

Catrell gave Iowa its last chance of the contest with an opportunity to tie the contest in the 87th minute, but her shot would be blocked by the Wildcat back line.

The Hawkeyes will close out the regular season on Saturday, hosting Wisconsin at 1 p.m. at the Iowa Soccer Complex. Iowa will honor Jade Grimm, Allie Adam, Stefani Campbell, Gabrielle Ainsworth, Dana Dalrymple and Kat Lewis for Senior Day.
