IOWA CITY, Iowa — Senior Bradi Wall, a member of the Canadian Women’s National Baseball Team, has been selected as recipient of the team’s 2012 Jimmy Rattlesnake Award. The award is presented annually to the player who shows great performance and sportsmanship.
Wall, an infielder on the University of Iowa softball team, will receive the award Saturday night at the annual Baseball Canada Awards Banquet. This year’s event is in Quebec City at Fairmont Le Château Frontenac.
“Bradi represents a great fit for this award,” said André Lachance, manager of baseball operations and head coach of the Women’s National Team for Baseball Canada. “Her presence at shortstop gave our team the stability needed to perform at our best.”
Wall played in 52 of Iowa’s 53 games a year ago, making 52 starts at second base. The Swift Current, Sask., Canada, native batted .211 with 17 runs scored and 14 RBI. She swiped four bases and turned in five multi-hit and two multi-RBI games. Wall tallied five doubles and four walks. Defensively, she led the Hawkeye middle infield that turned 26 doubles plays (.49 per game) a year ago, the sixth-highest total in the country.
Wall did not play prep softball, as it was not sponsored in her hometown. She played on the boys’ baseball team.
“Bradi receiving this award from Baseball Canada is a testament to her commitment to the game and her team,” said UI head coach Marla Looper. “It is always a privilege to have such well-rounded student-athletes in our program that ultimately represent the program in all facets; with their play on the field, being a great teammate, and their character on and off the field. Bradi is a positive member of our team at Iowa, so it was not a surprise that she has the same impact on her national team.”
