Solid Start to the Northwestern Invite

EVANSTON, Ill. – The University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team is leading a pair of duals over Notre Dame (56-53) and Missouri State (69-40) following the first day of the Northwestern Invitational.

Iowa started the night off strong with a second place finish in the 200 free relay “A” final. Sophomore Brian Donatelli, senior Jordan Huff, sophomore Grant Betulius and freshman David Ernstsson touched the wall in 1:21.97 to finish second. The time is a season best for the quartet. Freshman Jackson Allen, junior Gianni Sesto, freshman Roman Trussov and senior Mitch Taylor finished fifth in the 200 free relay “B” final (1:23.13).

Junior Manuel Belzer collected a second place finish for the Hawkeyes in the 500 free. The Schornsheim, Germany, native touched the wall in 4:31.68 to claim second. Senior Patrick Weigand finished fourth in the event with a time of 4:36.32.

Freshman Addison Boschult recorded a third place finish in the 1-meter springboard, collecting a point total of 299.60.

Juniors Tyler Lentz and Kyle Noser finished fifth and seventh in the 200 IM. Lentz swam a time of 1:51.71 to finish fifth, and Noser touched in 1:52.83.

Huff swam a time of 20.60 to tie for third place in the 50 freestyle. Donatelli swam to the wall in 20.78, finishing sixth in the event.

The Hawkeyes concluded the first session of the Northwestern Invitational with a victory. Iowa collected first and second place finished in the 400 medley relay. Betulius, Trussov, senior Byron Butler, and Huff swam to the finish in 3:16.74 to claim the victory. Finishing in second were teammates junior Dustin Rhoads, senior Korey Schneider, Taylor and Ernstsson (3:17.76).
