In our countdown to the start of the 2013 softball season, we are featuring all 24 Hawkeyes.
Aspen Rhodes is a freshman from Van Meter, Iowa. The infielder wears No. 1 for the Hawkeyes. Rhodes was a four-time all-state selection, earning first team honors as a sophomore and senior, third team as a junior and honorable mention as a freshman. She was also a four-time all-conference and all-district honoree and three-time all-county selection. Rhodes hit .578 (59-of-102) with 57 runs and 39 RBIs as a senior in 2012, leading Van Meter High School to its first state tournament appearance.
Rhodes also excelled in volleyball, basketball and track and field. She was a four-year letterwinner and two-time all-conference honoree in volleyball, and a two-time all-conference selection in basketball and three-time letterwinner in track. Rhodes placed third at state in the long jump in 2009 and second in the 100-meter dash and fourth in the 200-meter dash in 2010. She holds the school record in all three events.
Iowa opens the season Friday in Houston, Texas. The Hawkeyes face Lipscomb and Texas State at the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic.
