Ramos Earns Weekly Conference Honor

Feb. 19, 2013

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa junior Tony Ramos has been named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. The weekly honor is the third of Ramos’ career, and first this season.

The 2012 All-American earned the honor following his 9-0 major decision over third-ranked A.J. Schopp of Edinboro. Ramos, ranked No. 2 nationally at 133 pounds, scored two takedowns, two nearfall points, one reversal and piled up 1:26 of riding time to improve to 20-0 this season. He is 4-0 against ranked opponents, and has scored bonus points in 18 of his 20 wins, including nine pins, eight major decisions and one technical fall.

The Hawkeyes have earned Big Ten weekly honors five times this season, more than any other school. Sophomore Nick Moore earned Big Ten honors Jan. 29, junior Derek St. John was recognized Dec. 11, and senior Matt McDonough has been honored on two occasions, Nov. 20 and Feb. 5.

The Hawkeyes (19-1, 8-0) return to the mat this weekend at the NWCA National Dual Meet Championships in Minneapolis. Competition begins Friday at 6 p.m. (CT). The entire tournament will be broadcast live on AM 800 KXIC, and streamed online at hawkeyesports.com via Hawkeye All-Access.
