IOWA CITY, Iowa — Alyssa Navarro has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the University of Iowa softball program next year, UI head coach Marla Looper announced Thursday.
“Alyssa provides additional depth at the corners on the infield,” said Looper. “She also brings the potential for a potent bat. Through the years we have tried to increase our offensive production, and she has the opportunity and ability to do that.”
A native of Dinuba, Calif., Navarro has been selected first team all-conference during each of her first three seasons at Dinuba High School. Navarro, an infielder, is a three-time team captain, who has won her team’s MVP, best defensive and best offensive player awards. Navarro is hitting .431 with four home runs and a .843 slugging percentage during her senior season. She was also a three-year varsity basketball player.
Navarro joins Claire Fritsch, Michaela Johnson and Kara Misel in Iowa’s recruiting class.
|Softball Recruiting Class|
|Name||Pos.||Hometown (High School)|
|Claire Fritsch||IF/OF||Round Rock, Texas (Round Rock)|
|Michaela Johnson||1B||Wake Village, Texas (Texas)|
|Kara Misel||3B/1B||Solon, Iowa (Solon)|
|Alyssa Navarro||IF||Dinuba, Calif. (Dinuba)|
“We have depth in the outfield right now,” said Looper. “I am eager to get more depth in the infield and add that to Michelle (Zoeller), Bri (Brianna Luna) and Megan (Blank). We have to replace Bradi (Wall). It will give us some more options, and if someone is swinging a hot bat, they may find their way into the outfield as well.
“Our challenge is to use them to our best ability. They have to come in and earn those spots. I have never given anyone a spot; they have to earn it. They will give us competition within the team, which is ultimately going to make us better.”
