Evans Earns NWCA Academic Honor

May 21, 2013

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa sophomore Mike Evans has been named to the 2013 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division I All-Academic Team.

Evans is one of 21 All-Americans included on the list of 82 total student-athletes. The communications major placed sixth at the 2013 NCAA Championships and was Big Ten runner-up at 174 pounds. He finished the season with a 23-7 record and tied for the team lead with 10 major decisions.

“The NWCA All-Academic Team and Individual Team is one of the best acknowledgements that we can give to our coaches and athletes at the end of a physically grueling season” said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. “These young men have proved that they are not only talented competitors but are leaders in the classroom as well. The NWCA Board of Directors and staff look forward to watching these student-athletes continue their success at the collegiate level and eventually as the leaders of the future once they earn their college degrees.”

Evans, who earlier this season was one of seven Hawkeyes named Academic All-Big Ten, is the 17th Hawkeye in program history to receive the NWCA individual academic honor. Iowa has had at least one representative on the NWCA All-Academic team every year since head coach Tom Brands rejoined the program in 2006.
