IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa field hockey team will host Missouri State on Sunday at Grant Field in its final exhibition of the season. The contest is scheduled to begin at noon. Admission is free.
The Hawkeyes enter the 2013 season on the heels of back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. Iowa — the 1986 national champions — has made 22 appearances in program history, the most of any school as a member of the Big Ten Conference.
Last year, the Hawkeyes hosted Missouri State at Grant Field in their home opener, defeating the Bears 10-0. Iowa used goals from seven different players and did not allow the Bears to record a shot.
The Hawkeyes are 25-5-1 all-time against Missouri State, dating back to 1977. Iowa holds a perfect 16-0 mark in games held in Iowa City.
In their first exhibition on Aug. 22, the Hawkeyes won at Ball State, 11-0. Iowa claimed the regulation period, 10-0, getting goals from Stephanie Norlander (three), Niki Schultheis, Natalie Cafone, Dani Hemeon, Ali Campos, Sara Watro, Karli Johansen, and Kelsey Mitchell. In the overtime period, Stephanie Norlander scored just over a minute in. Norlander, Hemeon, and Schultheis also tallied goals in the practice shootout.
Goalkeepers Kelsey Boyce and Alexandra Pecora each played a half to earn the shutout.
Iowa opens the regular season in Easton, Pa., facing Bucknell (Aug. 30) and Lafayette College (Sept. 1). The Hawkeyes open their home slate, Sept. 7-8, hosting the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Iowa faces Wake Forest on Sept. 7 at 11:30 a.m. (CT) and North Carolina on Sept. 8 at 11:30 a.m. (CT).
