DES MOINES, Iowa — The University of Iowa soccer team edged Drake, 1-0, in its 2013 season opener Friday night at the Cownie Soccer Complex behind the leg of sophomore Lana Bonekemper.

The forward from Cincinnati, Ohio, tallied her first career goal in the 75th minute via a penalty kick. Junior Cloe Lacasse got loose in the box and was dragged down by a Bulldog defender, drawing a foul and giving Iowa the penalty kick.

Bonekemper buried the shot into the net past Drake goalkeeper Andrea Swanson to send the Hawkeyes to their 19th-straight nonconference victory dating back to the 2010 season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Clark withstood two shots on goal by the Bulldogs, making two saves to post her second career shutout. Drake attempted eight shots during the contest, a number dwarfed by Iowa’s 19 shots, 12 of which came in the first half.

Lacasse and Catrell each attempted four shots for the Hawkeyes, while Anne Marie Thomas and Bonekemper had two shots with seven other Hawkeyes recording at least one shot attempt.

“We had some good opportunities with restart chances and corner kicks,” said UI head coach Ron Rainey. “At times, we were a bit too direct, shooting from distance when we could’ve been closer.”

Six Hawkeyes played the duration of the match. Senior Alex Melin, juniors Caitlin Brown, Emily Scott, Melanie Pickert, Lacasse, and Thomas all logged 90 minutes.

“We had great energy tonight from our bench players,” Rainey said. “We’ve got a game Sunday, and people have to be ready to play.”

The Hawkeyes return to action Sunday afternoon when they face Western Michigan in their regular season home opener at the Iowa Soccer Complex. Game time is set for 1 p.m. (CT).
