EVANSTON, Ill. – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team tallied its first conference win of the season, downing Northwestern, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

The game was scoreless until the 85th minute when senior Ashley Catrell was clipped from behind before she could attempt a shot just a few feet inside the box, drawing a penalty.

Catrell would take advantage of the penalty kick, knocking the ball past Northwestern Jenna Hascher for the only goal of the game.

“Today was a grind,” said UI head coach Ron Rainey. “Sunday games are a lot about how hard you work, if you can catch some breaks, and if you are sound defensively.”

Iowa withstood a barrage of attacks from Northwestern’s leading scorer Kate Allen, who attempted seven shots, four of which were on goal.

“Our back line was excellent today,” said Rainey. “Today was one of those games where we had to do whatever it would take to get the job done.”

Sophomore Hannah Clark made eight saves in the contest, notching her sixth shutout of the season.

The win moves Iowa’s record to 9-2-0, which includes a 1-2-0 mark in Big Ten Conference play.

The Hawkeyes next match will take place on Thursday in Lincoln, Neb., against Nebraska beginning at 4 p.m. (CT).
