IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa soccer team edged Michigan State, 1-0, in double overtime on Sunday afternoon at the Iowa Soccer Complex in a hard fought Big Ten Conference match-up.
The Hawkeyes outshot the Spartans in the first half, 4-2, but neither team was able to capitalize on its opportunities.
The second half yielded a much more aggressive and determined attack, as Iowa unleashed 12 shots on Michigan State goalkeeper Gabrielle Gauruder. Gauruder was in the right position time and time again, making 11 saves in the contest.
Iowa’s last shot of regulation came with just 18 seconds left on the clock, as senior Ashley Catrell attempted a corner kick. Catrell’s cross floated to the far corner of the box, and junior Anne Marie Thomas headed the ball into the net for what appeared to be the game-winning goal.
A foul was called on Iowa in the process, negating what would have been Thomas’ third goal of the season.
The match continued into two overtimes after the first extra-period consisted of more physical play and shot attempts, but no goals.
With 4:36 remaining in the second overtime, junior Melanie Pickert set up for a free kick approximately 35 yards out. The Canton, Mich., native sent a line-drive kick into the box, where Thomas deflected the shot into the right side of the goal to secure Iowa’s second conference win.
“I love that even after the adversity of having a goal called back, we kept grinding away,” said UI head coach Ron Rainey.
The Hawkeye defense allowed only six shots on the day, while unleashing 23 on the opposing defense.
“Hannah Clark made all the saves that she needed to, but our players in front of her did some awesome work,” said Rainey.
Iowa, which improved to 10-3-0 overall and 2-3 in Big Ten play, returns to action Oct. 12 at Indiana beginning at 5 p.m. (CT).
