IOWA CITY, Iowa — The black squad downed the gold team, 122-104, Friday night at the Black & Gold Intrasquad Meet at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool.
“There were so many fun events, some swimmers swam off-events,” said UI head coach Marc Long. “The seniors did the lineups, we had a lot of fun with it.”
The meet, in which the seniors “draft” the two teams is a yearly tradition for the Hawkeyes. It features a 50-free where only the divers compete and meet serves as a kickoff to the season.
Senior Lindsay Seemann led the black squad, posting three event wins on the night. She got the evening started by swimming the lead leg of the 200-medley relay (1:44.36). She was joined on the relay by seniors Karolina Wartalowicz and Abbey Tuchscherer and sophomore Olivia Kabacinski.
Seemann also posted first-place finishes in the 200-free (1:51.60) and 100-back (57.27). Kabacinski also won an individual event, touching in first place in the 100 breast in 1:04.13.
Senior Dustin Rhoads paced the men’s team, posting a pair of wins to go along with a runner-up finish. The Ames, Iowa, native, placed first as part of the 200-medley relay team (1:30.76) along with junior Grant Betulius, Andrew Marciniak, and Jackson Halsmer.
He also won the 100-back (49.01) and finished second in the 200-free relay (1:24.05) along with sophomore Charles Holliday, Betulius and Halsmer.
Senior Manuel Belzer posted two first place finishes to pace the gold squad, touching in in 9:44.12 to take the 1,000-free, while also winning the 500-free in 4:36.21.
Sophomore Roman Trussov made a strong contribution to the gold squad, posting two first place finishes. He won won the 100-breast in 54.60 — an NCAA “B” cut time — while also being a member of the winning 200-free relay (1:23.36) along with sophomores Jackson Allen and David Ernstsson and senior Gianni Sesto.
Freshman Serena Wanasek posted a first and two second place finishes. She posted the top time in the 500 free (5:11.90), while finishing as runner-up in the 1,000 free (10:41.36) and as a member of the 200-free relay (1:37.30) along with Emma Sougstad, Emily Hovren and Hannah Maher.
As for the “special” 50-yard freestyle — Abby Grilli posted a time of 29.20 to claim the women’s bragging rights, while Brandis Heffner sprinted to the top men’s time in 24.76.
The Hawkeyes return to action Oct. 18, hosting Michigan State and Northern Iowa in a dual at the CRWC Pool beginning at 4 p.m. (CT).
“It’s good to see racing,” said Long. “We’re really excited for the Big Ten season to get back in action on Friday.”
