IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa women’s tennis players Morven McCulloch and Katie Zordani both earned a spot in the singles main draw of the ITA Central Regionals after competing in the qualifying bracket earlier today.
“We are very pleased at the way that Katie and Morven competed today,” said UI assistant coach Courtney Nagle. “It’s great to have four players competing in the main draw.”
Junior Morven McCulloch defeated UMKC’s Maddie Schulte, 6-0, 6-1, before knocking off Lexi Aranda of SIUE in the second round of the qualifying bracket, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.
Junior Katie Zordani defeated McKenzie Thomas of SIUE, 6-0, 6-1 in the first round of the qualifying bracket. She punched her ticket to the main draws with a second round victory over Bradley’s Ashley Thai, 6-2, 6-3.
McCulloch and Zordani join fellow Hawkeyes Ruth Seaborne and Shelby Talcott in the first round of the main draws tomorrow.
The Hawkeyes also begin competition in the doubles portion of the tournament tomorrow at 8 a.m. (CT).
The No. 28-ranked duo of Ruth Seaborne and Morven McCulloch earned a first round bye, while the duo of Shelby Talcott and Katie Zordani square off against Kendall Heitzner and Paula Rincon-Otero of Minnesota.
“The girls are playing well and we look forward to seeing that continue in the main draws of doubles and singles this weekend,” said Nagle.
