IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa soccer team was unable to overcome two early goals in Sunday’s contest versus conference foe Ohio State, falling by a score of 3-1.

Megan Fuller put the Buckeyes on the scoreboard in the fourth minute, sending a corner kick off of the hands of Hawkeye goalkeeper Hannah Clark and into the net, giving Ohio State a 1-0 lead.

Less than five minutes later, Nichelle Prince, Ohio State’s leading scorer, netted her 12th goal of the season off of a give-and-go from teammate Ellyn Gruber.

In the 57th minute, Michela Paradiso scored her third goal of the season, pushing the Buckeye lead to 3-0.

Junior Melanie Pickert put the Hawkeyes on the board at the 63:18 mark via a penalty kick, after a yellow card was drawn on an Ohio State defender in the box. The goal is Pickert’s fifth of the season, which is tied for a team-high.

The loss is the first multi-goal defeat Iowa has suffered this season.

“We made some mistakes that a good team will make you pay for,” said head coach Ron Rainey. “Ohio State is a good team, and they punished us for our errors.”

The Hawkeyes fired 20 shots compared to Ohio State’s 10, with Pickert accounting for six, and senior Ashley Catrell accounting for five.

The loss moves Iowa to a 12-5-1, with a 4-5-1 record in conference play. The Hawkeyes’ final match of the season takes place on Nov. 2 against Purdue at the Iowa Soccer Complex, with the contest beginning at 1 p.m. (CT).
