IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa wrestling team scored bonus points from top to bottom to defeat Buffalo, 46-0, Thursday night inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Derek St. John and Michael Kelly each recorded pins, Tony Ramos and Mike Evans won by technical fall, and six other Hawkeyes (6-0) scored major decisions. The Hawkeyes totaled 57 takedowns and surrendered just one.

“That’s how it should be,” said UI head coach Tom Brands. “It doesn’t matter who the opponent is. You may not get a shutout every time, but you strive for it. (We have a couple weights) were we have to do a better job of being ready to go the entire match.”

Cory Clark set the tone at 125, scoring four takedowns and two nearfall points to win 13-3. Ramos followed with eight takedowns and scored a pair of nearfall points early in the third to terminate his match with 1:06 left.

“It’s exciting after a loss to get back on the winning ways and doing things right,” said Ramos. “One of the things we’ve been talking about was when I was pinning guys I was scoring a lot of points and wearing them out. We’re trying to get back to scoring a lot of points and when things open up, take them as they happen.”

Josh Dziewa used a reversal and two nearfall points to earn a 16-7 win at 141, and Kelly and St. John put together back-to-back pins to stretch the Hawkeye lead to 25-0 at the intermission.

Nick Moore piled up 3:34 of riding time en route to a 13-4 win at 165, and Evans scored five takedowns and three nearfall points in the opening period before finishing the tech. fall in 5:58.

Ethen Lofthouse stretched Iowa’s lead to 38-0 with eight takedowns at 184, setting up a couple of Hawkeye debuts at 197 and 285.

Sammy Brooks scored a takedown with 10 seconds left to earn a 13-5 major decision in his Carver-Hawkeye Arena debut, and Bobby Telford returned to the mat for the first time since the season opener on Nov. 16.

Telford scored five takedowns and five nearfall points to win 16-3. It was his first appearance this season in front of the home crowd and the first time this year his match has gone the distance. He had pinned his previous five opponents.

“It’s good to have Telford on the mat,” said Brands. “I like to see falls, quick falls, but I also like to see it go longer just to see him wrestle.”

“It was good to get it going,” said Telford. “I wanted to be on the mat at Iowa State. I wanted to be on the mat at Edinboro. I don’t want to be off the mat. It’s time to keep it going. We have a big one on Saturday.”

Iowa returns to the mat Saturday, Dec. 21 when it hosts No. 1 Penn State on Mediacom Mat inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

“You don’t look ahead, but maybe you could say this is part of the prep,” said Brands. “Penn State comes to town a week from Saturday and we have to be ready to go. (We need to keep a heavy pace) every time and then we’ll find out how tough we are.”

Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for youth 18-years old and younger. Children five-years old and younger are admitted free, but everyone attending the dual must have a ticket. The Penn State-Iowa dual is Iowa’s spirit night. Fans will be asked to wear a black or gold color based on “Row Assignment” rather than section. Check hawkeyesports.com for “Spirit Dual” row assignments.
