CHICAGO, Ill. — The University of Iowa men’s gymnastics team began its 2014 season at the 44th annual Windy City Invitational on Saturday at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Iowa went up against teams from UIC and conference foes Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio State, and Michigan.
The Hawkeyes began the meet on Parallel bars. Redshirt sophomore Cyrus Dobre-Mofid led the team with a score of 14.600 and placed 12th overall. Sophomore Jack Boyle finished with a score of 14.400, followed by redshirt junior Lance Alberhasky (14.250), sophomore Emmanuel Monroy (14.200), sophomore Matt Loochtan (13.600), and junior Mitchell Landau (13.000).
In the horizontal bar, Landau led the Hawkeyes with a score of 14.850 and an overall third place finish, while Boyle followed placing fourth with a 14.800. Other Hawkeyes that performed on the bar include Alberhasky (14.300), sophomore Del Vecchio Orozco (14.050), freshman Cory Paterson (13.900), and Dobre-Mofid (13.550).
Paterson led the Hawkeyes in floor exercise with a score of 14.250 and an 13th overall finish, while Dobre-Mofid followed with a 14.000. Boyle then followed with a score of 13.350 and junior Brandon Field (13.300), redshirt senior Matt McGrath (11.700), and Alberhasky (11.450) rounded out the rotation for Iowa.
As the third rotation began, Iowa took to the pommel horse and was led by Monroy with a score of 13.800 who placed 17th overall, followed by sophomore Doug Sullivan (13.500), and Landau (13.400). Freshman David Spanier then finished with a 13.150, with Dobre-Mofid coming in closely after with a score of 13.050. Rounding out the rotation was Boyle (12.900), Alberhasky (12.500), Orozco (10.800), and Paterson (10.750).
The Hawkeyes came into the fourth rotation in sixth place with a team score of 274.200 as they went to the rings. Iowa had two top-10 finishers in the event, as McGrath (seventh place) led the team with a score of 14.800 and Alberhasky (ninth place) and freshman Andrew Botto followed with scores of 14.600 and 14.500. Loochtan (14.050), Boyle (13.750), and Dobre-Mofid (12.850) rounded out the event, respectively.
On the fifth and final rotation, Iowa competed on the vault and was led by junior William Albert who recorded a score of 14.550 and finished in 18th place. Dobre-Mofid followed behind Albert with a score of 14.500 and Loochtan, Field, and McGrath all ended with scores of 14.250. Paterson, Alberhasky, and Boyle finished the rotation with scores of 14.100, 14.050, and 13.900.
In the all-around standings, the Hawkeyes did not disappoint as the team had three athletes finish in the top five. Boyle (83.100), Dobre-Mofid (82.550), and Alberhasky (81.150) each took second, third, and fourth place, respectively.
In the final team standings, Iowa finished in fifth place in front of UIC with an overall score of 417.700. Michigan came out on top with a score of 437.500, followed by Illinois (436.050), Ohio State (436.050), and Minnesota (424.800).
Head coach JD Reive was hoping for a better, overall performance from his team.
“We had a great start, a terrible middle, and a mediocre finish,” Reive stated. It was a disappointing night for the Hawkeyes. We under-performed based on our preparation and clearly have more work to do. We need to learn to compete in the same manner in which we train. There were individual highlights but it’s all about the team.”
Reive hopes that the Hawkeyes will improve from this experience in preparation for their next meet.
“Every weekend is a learning opportunity and we will certainly take away what we need from this meet and work harder to prepare for the next one.”
The Hawkeyes will next compete on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 5 p.m. against the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla.
