NORMAN, Okla. — The University of Iowa men’s gymnastics team hit the road this weekend at top-ranked Oklahoma at the Howard McCasland Field House at in Norman, Okla.
The Hawkeyes began the meet on the pommel horse and were led by sophomore Doug Sullivan with a score of 14.750. Sullivan was followed by sophomore Emmanuel Monroy with a score of 14.200 and freshman David Spanier with a 13.450. Rounding out the event was junior Mitchell Landau (13.250), sophomore Jack Boyle (12.800) and sophomore Del Vecchio Orozco (12.500).
As the first rotation began, Iowa took to the floor as redshirt senior Matt McGrath paced the team with a score of 15.200 and finished third in the event. Sophomores Matt Loochtan and Boyle followed behind McGrath with scores of 15.050 and 14.800. Redshirt junior Lance Alberhasky then tallied a 14.650, followed by redshirt sophomore Cyrus Dobre-Mofid (14.550) and freshman Cory Paterson (13.350).
On the vault, McGrath displayed his senior leadership by leading the Hawkeyes with a score of 15.100 and finishing in second place. Loochtan then posted a third place finish with a score of 14.650, followed by Dobre-Mofid (14.400), freshman Andrew Botto (14.350), junior William Albert (14.250), and Paterson (14.200).
Loochtan then led Iowa with a runner-up finish on the rings by scoring a 14.750. McGrath posted a 14.600, followed by Botto with a 14.400. Rounding out the rotation were Alberhasky (14.000), Boyle (13.800), and Dobre-Mofid (13.650).
The fourth rotation began with the Hawkeyes on the horizontal bar. Landau led the Hawkeyes and won the event with a score of 15.200. Paterson followed behind, slightly, with a score of 15.000 and Boyle came in third with a 14.700. Finishing out the rotation were Dobre-Mofid (14.400), Alberhasky (14.300), and Orozco (14.200).
On the fifth and final rotation of the meet, Landau finished in the runner-up spot on the parallel bars with a score of 14.900. Alberhasky and Dobre-Mofid followed with scores of 14.700 and 13.800. Boyle, Monroy, and Loochtan finished the meet with scores of 13.500, 13.100, and 11.900, respectively.
In the all-around, Boyle finished on top as the lone competitor with a score of 83.400.
The Hawkeyes fell to Oklahoma by a score of 430.600-444.300.
Head coach JD Reive was, overall, very pleased with how his team performed.
“I felt that the guys did a fantastic job tonight,” Reive commented. “Our goal was to break 430, which we did. We still have a lot of things to work on, but tonight we did the things that we are capable of doing and I am just very proud of our team.”
As the season continues, Reive hopes to see a continuation out of his gymnasts as they perform against top competition.
“This is the team that Iowa is in 2014. We performed the way that we should have with the way that we had been training. We are much more indicative as a team than the first meet and for the next eight weeks of competition.”
The Hawkeyes compete next in front of their home crowd as they go up against eighth-ranked Illinois on Friday, Feb. 7 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The meet begins at 7 p.m. (CT).
