HAWKEYES SQUARE OFF WITH MARQUETTE
The University of Iowa women’s tennis team travels to Milwaukee, Wis., on Saturday to face Marquette. Competition begins at 11 a.m. (CT) at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
Iowa won the last meeting between the two, 5-2, in Iowa City in 2013. The Hawkeyes lead the all-time series, 15-2.
“Marquette is a tough Big East team that competes very well. We have struggled on the road so far this year, and we need to have a great week of practice and go into Marquette ready to go. I cannot say enough about how the team competed this past weekend. I feel like we have turned a corner and our improvement over the past three weeks has been a testament to the hard work and belief this team has put in.”
The Hawkeyes hosted a pair of ranked opponents this past weekend at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center. On Friday, the Hawkeyes knocked off 72nd-ranked Oregon, 5-2. Junior Shelby Talcott and sophomore Annette Dohanics both won their singles matches in straight sets. The Hawkeyes capped off the weekend with a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to No. 74 DePaul on Sunday. Iowa led 3-2 before falling in two-straight tiebreakers. Junior Morven McCulloch defeated 52nd-ranked Ana Vladutu of DePaul at the No. 2 singles spot, 7-5, 6-2.
MCCULOCH AND TALCOTT NEAR PERFECT IN SINGLES
Juniors Morven McCulloch and Shelby Talcott each hold a 4-1 record in singles this season. McCulloch owns a 2-1 at the No. 2 position, including a victory over 52nd-ranked Ana Vladutu of DePaul. Talcott is 2-0 at the No. 3 spot with three victories coming in straight sets.
