IOWA CITY, Iowa — The No. 10 Iowa men’s gymnastics team concluded its home schedule Saturday, hosting a tri-meet against No. 6 Minnesota and No. 11 Nebraska. The Gophers won the meet with a score of 437.400, the Hawkeyes came in second with a score of 433.050 and the Huskers finished third with a score of 418.150.

“I’m pretty pleased with the performances today,” Head coach JD Reive stated. “We hit a lot of sets. We still had a couple misses, but showed a lot of improvement on events. The fact that we went seven for seven on pommel horse, stuck three vaults and hit a lot of routines, that is what we wanted to do.”

The Hawkeyes began the meet on the floor as sophomore Matt Loochtan led Iowa with a score of 15.150 and a third place finish in the event. Redshirt sophomore Cyrus Dobre-Mofid came in sixth with a 14.650, followed by redshirt junior Lance Alberhasky and redshirt senior Matt McGrath, both with scores of 14.500.

Iowa went to the pommel horse next, an event in which the team had struggled on throughout the year. Today, the Hawkeyes showed much improvement as sophomore Doug Sullivan scored a 15.250 and won the event. Sophomore Del Vecchio Orozco followed with a score of 14.350 while sophomore Jack Boyle finished with a score of 14.300.

The Hawkeyes headed to the rings, leading with a team score of 144.700. McGrath, competing on his specialty event, placed fifth with a score of 14.500. Loochtan and Boyle took seventh and eighth, respectivel, with scores of 14.150 and 14.050.

Iowa fell to second place behind Minnesota heading to vault, but showed a strong performance as McGrath, once again, led the Hawkeyes with a score of 15.100. Junior Brandon Field followed with a score of 14.950, while Loochtan posted a 14.800. All three gymnasts took the top-three spots in the event.

Still in second, the Hawkeyes were led by both Dobre-Mofid and sophomore Emmanuel Monroy on the parallel bars with scores of 14.600, each. Junior Mitchell Landau followed with a score of 14.400 and Boyle with a score of 14.350.

Heading into the final event of the afternoon, Iowa had an overall score of 360.800. On the horizontal bar, Landau led the Hawkeyes with a score of 15.150 and won the event. Boyle came in fourth with a score of 14.850, followed by Alberhasky with a score of 14.350.

As the lone competitor in the all-around, Boyle posted a season-high score of 85.600.

The Hawkeyes will travel to Las Vegas, Nev. to compete at the Winter Cup from Feb. 20-22. The following day, the Hawkeyes travel to Chicago to compete against the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames, with the meet set to begin at 1 p.m. (CT).
