MANHATTAN, Kan. — The University of Iowa baseball team dropped its second-straight game, falling 5-2 at Kansas State on Saturday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium.

The Wildcats (6-7) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Ross Kivett scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Austin Fisher. After UI starter Andrew Hedrick pitched around a pair of hits and a walk in the second, he settled in, holding Kansas State scoreless until the fifth.

Kivett drew a leadoff walk to start the fifth before being sacrificed to second on a bunt by Lance Miles. After an intentional walk to Shane Conlon and a double steal moved both runners up a base, R.J. Santigate delivered a two-run single up the middle to push the Wildcat lead to 3-0.

After leaving a total of five runners on base in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, the Hawkeyes put a two-spot on the scoreboard in the sixth. Junior Jake Yacinich and sophomore Tyler Peyton led off the inning with consecutive singles. Yacinich scored the first run on a Dan Potempa RBI groundout before senior Taylor Zeutenhorst tallied the second RBI with a single to second base.

The Wildcats tacked on single insurance runs in the sixth and eighth innings to stretch its advantage to 5-2. Blair DeBord had a one-out double in the sixth before scoring on Kivett’s RBI single. In the eighth, DeBord knocked in the fifth run with an RBI single, plating Max Brown.

Kansas State starter Jared Moore (3-1) pitched five innings, allowing a pair of runs on five hits before turning it over to the Wildcat bullpen. The Hawkeyes mustered two base runners in their final three at-bats.

Hedrick (2-1) took the loss for Iowa, allowing three runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings. He had two strikeouts and five walks in the game. Sophomore Tyler Radtke threw the final 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits.
