IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior Tony Ramos was named Mike Howard Most Valuable Wrestler at the team’s annual awards banquet Friday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Ramos won the NCAA and Big Ten championships at 133 pounds his senior season, posting an overall record of 32-2 with a team-high 12 pins. Ramos was undefeated in eight Big Ten duals, and finished the season with 18 straight wins, including five in a row against ranked opponents at the NCAA tournament. He scored bonus points in 19 of his 32 wins, and led Iowa with 76 dual points scored.
UI head coach Tom Brands also presented All-America awards to freshman Cory Clark, sophomore Nathan Burak, juniors Mike Evans and Bobby Telford, and senior Derek St. John.
St. John became the 18th four-time All-American in school history following a fifth-place finish at 157 pounds at the NCAA Championships. He placed fourth in 2011, second in 2012, and won the national tournament in 2013.
Clark and Burak both earned their first career All-America honor. Clark placed fifth at 125, while Burak placed eighth at 197.
Evans and Telford both finished in the top eight for the second time in their careers. Evans placed sixth at 174 for the second consecutive season, and Telford placed fourth at 285. Telford was an All-American in 2012, but injury defaulted from the tournament in 2013. His return to the award stand in 2014 warranted the Mike J. McGivern Award, presented annually to Iowa’s most courageous wrestler.
Senior Joe DuCharme was the recipient of the J. Donald McPike, Sr., Award for highest grade point average by a Hawkeye senior. DuCharme is a four-year letterwinner and has been named academic All-Big Ten in each of his four seasons. He is just the seventh Hawkeye in program history to earn academic conference honors four times.
The John and Dorothy Sill Award for most dedicated wrestler was shared by redshirt freshmen Thomas Gilman and Alex Meyer. The Coaches Appreciation Award was presented to redshirt freshman Sammy Brooks.
The Hawkeyes finished the 2013-14 season with a share of the Big Ten regular season title, one national champion, and one Big Ten champion. Six Hawkeyes earned All-America honors and eight were named academic All-Big Ten. The Hawkeyes owned an overall record of 15-2 and won a share of the Big Ten regular season title for the sixth time in the last seven seasons.
