ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The 71st ranked University of Iowa men’s tennis team dropped its second conference match of the season, falling to No. 46 Michigan by a 5-2 final. Iowa falls to 9-6 (1-2), while the Wolverines improve to 10-8 (2-2).
“I thought we played a tough match with Michigan this afternoon,” said UI head coach Steve Houghton. “Overall I was pleased with our play and was particularly proud of the way Brian Alden and Matt Hagan performed in singles.”
The Wolverines opened the match taking the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and 3 positions. The duo of junior Matt Hagan and senior Joey White, playing their first match at the No. 2 spot, fell by an 8-3 final to Berstein and Wong of Michigan. Seniors Jonas Dierckx and Chase Tomlins, playing their first doubles match together this season, dropped a close 8-7 (7-5) decision to Petrone and Rossi. The No. 1 team of seniors Brian Alden and Michael Swank were neck-and-neck with the No. 24 ranked team of Buzzi and Franks, but the match was suspended once the Wolverines had clinched the doubles point.
Michigan opened singles play with four straight singles victories, allowing the Wolverines to clinch the match. Alden, playing at the No. 2 singles spot, got the Hawkeyes on the board with a hard fought 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3) victory. Hagan wrapped up the match with a 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6) win at No. 4 singles.
The Hawkeyes have a quick turnaround, as they travel to East Lansing to take on Michigan State (7-10, 1-3) Sunday afternoon. First serve is slated for 11 a.m. (CT) inside the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
