IOWA CITY, Iowa — Two-time NCAA champion Brent Metcalf will represent Team USA at the 2015 Pan Am Games on Friday in Toronto, Canada.
Metcalf, a 2015 United States World Team member, competes at 65 kg/143 lbs. at the Mississauga Sports Centre. A live webcast of the event is available on ESPN3.
Metcalf is one of five U.S. World Team members using the Pan Am Games to prepare for the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas on Sept. 7-12. He qualified for the World Championships by winning the U.S. World Team Trials in June. His 2015 season also includes a World Cup title, a second-place finish at the Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix, and a third-place finish at the Grand Prix of Paris.
Tony Ramos, a 2014 NCAA champion and current World Team member, was scheduled to compete at the Pan Am Games but will miss the competition. Ramos is expected to return to the mat at the World Championships.
The Pan American Games is a multi-sport event held every four years, featuring the nations from North, Central and South America. The event precedes the Olympic Games by one year and consists of all summer Olympic sports, plus select non-Olympic sports. It serves as an Olympic-qualifying event for many of the participating sports.
The U.S. qualified 16 athletes in men’s and women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. Former Pan Am champions include Jordan Burroughs, Jake Herbert, and Tervel Dlagnev. All three wrestlers won freestyle titles in 2011 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
