IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team registered a nine-inning shutout (13-0) against Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) on Sept. 16 in its fall season opener at Bob Pearl Field.

Three multiple-run innings propelled the Hawkeyes to a 13-0 win over the Bears. Iowa started the scoring in the bottom of the first. Junior Katy Taylor led off the inning with a walk and stole second before senior Kaitlyn Mullarkey and junior Allie Wood hit a single and double, respectively. Sophomore Mallory Kilian followed with a home run to give the Hawkeyes an early, 4-0 lead.

After three scoreless innings, Iowa tacked on to its lead in the fifth. Wood and Kilian led off the inning with back-to-back singles before freshman infielder McKenzie Schneider drew a walk. Junior Angela Schmiederer and freshman Havyn Monteer followed with back-to-back singles to extend Iowa’s lead, 8-0.

The Hawkeyes added five more runs in the top of the seventh. Monteer started the rally with a walk, before juniors Daniella Ibarra (double), Cheyenne Pratt (single), and Taylor (single) registered three straight hits. Mullarkey kept the rally alive, reaching on an error to put the Hawkeyes ahead, 13-0.

Three pitchers — freshmen Taylor MaKowsky and Allison Doocy, and junior Ashley Yoways — combined for the shutout. The Hawkeye hurlers allowed eight hits and did not surrender a walk over nine innings. MaKowsky and Doocy struck out four batters apiece, while Yoways fanned one.

Taylor led the Hawkeyes at the plate, reaching base all five times with three hits and a pair of walks.

The Hawkeyes return to action Friday, Sept. 23, hosting Kirkwood Community College at Pearl Field. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. (CT).
