IOWA CITY, Iowa — The Gold team opened the Black & Gold World Series with a 4-0 shutout victory over the Black squad in a six-inning contest Wednesday afternoon at Duane Banks Field.
Junior C.J. Eldred picked up the victory, scattering two hits over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out five and issued a single walk. Grant Leonard got the final four outs without allowing a hit, but he did issue one walk.
The Gold team struck first in its first at-bat. Matt Hoeg had a one-out single before scoring on an RBI double from Jake Adams on a line drive off the wall in center field.
The margin extended 4-0 courtesy of a three-run third. Grant Judkins had a two-run single in the inning.
Hoeg finished 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored, while Judkins was 1-for-2 with two RBIs in the game.
Sophomore Shane Ritter suffered the loss for the Black squad, allowing four runs on five hits over three innings. He had two strikeouts to two walks. Elijah Wood got the final six outs, where he didn’t allow a hit, but walked one.
Game two of the series is set to begin Thursday at 4 p.m. at Banks Field.
