ROCHESTER, Minn. — University of Iowa All-American Sammy Brooks earned a berth at the 2017 U23 World Championships by sweeping five matches at the United States U23 World Team Trials last weekend in Rochester, Minnesota.
Brooks was one of eight Americans to qualify for the U23 World Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, on Nov. 21-26. He earned a spot on Team USA by defeating former NCAA champion Myles Martin, 9-5, 13-8, in the best-of-three finals of the 86 kg/189 lb. bracket.
Brooks graduated in 2017 and trains in Iowa City with the Hawkeye Wrestling Club. He is the third Hawkeye in the last four months to win a U.S. team trial or national championship event. Fellow 2017 graduate Thomas Gilman won the 57 kg division at the U.S. World Team Trials and went on to win a silver medal at the UWW World Championships in Paris. Brandon Sorensen, a three-time All-American and senior on this year’s Hawkeye team, won the 70 kg division at the University Nationals. Team USA did not participate at the University World Championships.
International wrestling competitions comes to Iowa City on April 7-8 when Carver-Hawkeye Arena plays host to the 2018 UWW World Cup. Thomas Gilman and members of Team USA — including Olympic gold medalists Jordan Burroughs and Kyle Snyder — wrestle in an eight-team dual tournament featuring the top freestyle wrestling teams in the world.
