IOWA CITY, Iowa — The United States men’s freestyle wrestling team defeated Georgia, 8-2, on Sunday morning to advance to the gold medal match at the 2018 UWW World Cup at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Team USA went 3-0 in Pool A and will wrestle Azerbaijan later today at 4 p.m. (CT) for the World Cup title. Azerbaijan advanced to the finals with a 3-0 record in Pool B. The Americans are looking for their first World Cup title since 2003. The dual is broadcast by NBCSN.
Former Hawkeye All-American Thomas Gilman was the first of eight Americans to win Sunday. Gilman earned his first career World Cup victory, defeating Teimuraz Vanishvili, 6-4, at 57 kg.
The U.S. outscored Georgia 75-14 in match points and held a 30-8 advantage in classification points.
