EVANSTON, Illinois – Angela Schmiederer’s RBI triple in the second inning lifted the University of Iowa softball team to a 3-0 victory over Northwestern Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field. The Hawkeyes and Wildcats are tied at one win a piece heading into Sunday’s series finale.

Down 1-2 in the count with two outs and runners on first and second, Schmiederer smacked a triple down the right field line to score senior Allie Wood and sophomore Havyn Monteer.

Iowa added to its lead in the third inning when sophomore Devin Cantu hit a single through the right side to score senior Mallory Kilian.

Northwestern threatened, putting runners on in the first five innings, but the Hawkeyes, led by Allison Doocy, stranded five Wildcat runners in the contest.

Doocy improved to 13-12 on the year. The sophomore threw eight strikeouts in her fourth shutout performance of the season.

NOTABLES

  • Eight Hawkeyes had hits in the contest. They were: Angela Schmiederer, Mallory Kilian, Taylor Libby, Allie Wood, Sarah Kurtz, Devin Cantu, and Brooke Rozier.
  • Doocy has thrown eight or more strikeouts in 14 games this season.

QUOTING HEAD COACH MARLA LOOPER
“The opponents have done a good job of scouting Doocy over the last few weeks so we’ve had a few of our other pitchers come in and let her rest. I think that allowed her to come in and throw the way she did today. She came into the game with the mindset that she was going to take care of business and she did that. It was also nice to finally see us produce some offense today.”
