IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa junior Brady Schanuel became the fifth Hawkeye selected in the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft when he was taken in the 27th Round by the Milwaukee Brewers.
The right-hander from Swansea, Illinois, was selected with the 815th pick. He is the 20th player selected under Iowa head coach Rick Heller. The five draft picks in 2018 tie the program record. Five Hawkeyes were also selected in 2015 in Heller’s second season and in 1992.
Schanuel went 5-7 with a 5.94 ERA in 14 appearance (13 starts) during his first season as a Hawkeye. He finished the season with 65 strikeouts over 53 innings with the strikeout total tying Schanuel for 13th in the Big Ten Conference.
Schanuel’s best start came on March 23 when he tossed a career-best seven innings, allowing just one hit and fanning 11 in a 5-1 victory over No. 11 Indiana. The 11 strikeouts were the most by a Hawkeye since 2004. He was named the Big Ten Co-Pitcher of the Week on March 25.
It is the third time Schanuel has been drafted. He was selected 36th Round by the Oakland Athletics in 2016 and the 20th Round by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2017.
