Hawkeyes Rake in Fall Opener

IOWA CITY, IOWA — The University of Iowa baseball team pushed across 25 hits and 23 runs in 12 innings against Southeastern Community College on Thursday night at Duane Banks Field. The exhibition was Iowa’s first game of the fall. 
 
Senior right-hander Cole McDonald, who struck out four batter in two innings, started the contest, while junior Trace Hoffman closed the game. Six Hawkeye pitchers surrendered 11 hits and struck out 17 batters, while only allowing six runs. 
 
Senior Tanner Wetrich blasted a two-run home run to left field in the sixth inning and was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Redshirt freshman Connor McCaffery went 6-for-8 with one double, two steals, and four RBIs. Ben Norman had two doubles and drove in three runs in eight at-bats. Mitchell Boe, Austin Martin, and Lorenzo Elion registered two hits apiece. 
 
The Hawkeyes continue fall ball action tomorrow night against the Ontario Blue Jays at 5 p.m. (CT) at Duane Banks Field. Admission is free.
