DES MOINES, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball team (16-22, 2-10 Big Ten) was defeated by Drake (30-13, 15-1 MVC), 5-0, on Wednesday night at Ron Buel Field.

Junior Havyn Monteer went 2-for-2 on the night.

HEAR FROM COACH GILLISPIE

“Havyn did a great job today, she battled at the plate with two different pitchers, one who was just drafted. She knows to make it happen, she’ll find a way on. We are looking for her to continue that this weekend.”

“We have to be mentally tougher to not have innings that allow a lot of runs. We are still fighting and we want to put it all together this weekend vs Rutgers.”

HOW IT HAPPENED

After two scoreless innings, the Bulldogs took the lead in the third inning on a two out, RBI single.

In the fourth, the Hawkeyes threatened with two runners on base following a hit by Monteer and walk by freshman Sydney Owens, but both runners were left on base.

Drake changed pitchers in the fourth inning as Iowa looked to tie the game at one, but Iowa couldn’t even the score and the Bulldogs tacked on four more runs in the fifth.

The five-run deficit proved to be too much and the Hawkeyes fell to Drake, 5-0.

IN THE CIRCLE

Sophomore Sarah Lehman pitched the first four innings, earning four strikeouts until junior Allison Doocy relieved Lehman in the fifth, grabbing three strikeouts of her own. Senior Erin Riding closed out the game.
