AKRON, Ohio — University of Iowa freshman Tony Cassioppi placed third at the U23 World Team Trials last weekend in Akron, Ohio. 

Cassioppi won six of seven matches at 125 kg, outscoring his opponents 65-14 and registering four technical falls. His lone loss was in the quarterfinals to Fresno State’s AJ Nevills. He then strung together four straight wins on the backside of the bracket, including a 13-2 technical fall in the consolation finals against top-seeded Youssif Hemida, a 2019 All-American from Maryland.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Eight University of Iowa wrestlers are set to compete Saturday and Sunday at the U23 World Team Trials in Akron, Ohio.
 
All eight Hawkeyes are vying for positions on the United States U23 freestyle team that competes at the U23 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, from Oct. 28 through Nov. 3.   
 
Competition begins Saturday at 8:30 a.m. (CT). The quarterfinals, semifinals, medal matches, and best-of-three finals begin Sunday at 8:30 a.m. A live video stream and complete results are available at FloWrestling.org.
