IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa freshman Kalena Burns was named the Big Ten Softball’s Co-Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Burns hit .563 with six RBIs and two home runs in four games at The Spring Games March 6-7. Burns notched three multi-hit games throughout the weekend, including a walk-off homerun in the eighth inning against Loyola-Chicago on March 6. In the next game against South Dakota State, Burns went 4-for-4 at the plate with a two-run homerun. Burns also registered 37 putouts with no errors at first base and a 1.000 slugging percentage in four games.
The Corona, Calif., native increased her overall batting average to .403, ranking second on the team and eighth in the Big Ten Conference.
The accolade is the first of her career and third for Iowa this season. Freshman Nia Carter was named the Big Ten Player and Freshman of the Week on Feb. 24. Junior pitcher Lauren Shaw was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week Feb. 17.
The Hawkeyes bring their 17-5 record to Tampa this upcoming weekend to play Southeast Missouri State, Ohio and South Florida at the South Florida Tournament.
