Noel Named B1G Athlete of the Week

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa freshman Alexa Noel has been named Big Ten Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.

A native of Summit, New Jersey, Noel went 4-0 for the Hawkeyes last weekend playing at the No. 1 singles and doubles positions.

In the Big Ten season opener, Noel won in straight sets in singles (6-2, 6-0) and teamed with Samantha Mannix to win 6-2 in doubles, leading Iowa to a 5-2 win over Illinois. It was the Hawkeyes first win against the Illini since 2014.

Noel also went undefeated at the top spot against No. 8 Northwestern, winning a three-set tiebreak (6-4, 6-7, 10-5) against No. 57 Julie Byrne, and again teaming with Mannix for a 6-2 doubles win against the 47th-ranked doubles team in the country.

Noel improved to 8-0 in singles and 7-2 in doubles this season.

The Big Ten honor is the first of Noel’s career and the first for Iowa since Elise van Heuvelen Treadwell was recognized in March of 2020.

Iowa returns to action with matches Friday at Wisconsin and Sunday at Minnesota.
