IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa softball team won both games of a doubleheader Sunday at Pearl Field. The Hawkeyes defeated Illinois State, 3-2, and Indian Hills Community College, 8-3.
In the two games combined, sophomore Grace Banes hit 5-for-7 with four RBIs, and senior Riley Sheehy reached base five times, scoring four runs.
Senior pitcher Breanna Vasquez made the start and got the win in Game 1, pitching five innings and striking out four. Freshman Kat Serna got the save by pitching three innings in relief.
Serna made the start in Game 2, pitching three innings and striking out five. Denali Loecker threw four innings in relief and notched the win while striking out four.
“It was great being back and getting some experience under our belt,” said Iowa head coach Renee Gillispie. “We saw a lot of improvement out there. I was impressed by our pitchers, and we got contributions from a number of hitters.”
