Hawkeyes Down San Diego, 3-1 

SAN DIEGO, California – The University of Iowa softball team defeated San Diego, 3-1, on Saturday evening at the Torero Classic.

Sophomore pitcher Denali Loecker threw a complete game, allowing a lone run on four hits.

Sophomore Brylee Klosterman was 2-for-4 on the day, while junior Nia Carter was 2-for-3.

Sophomores Grace Banes and Amber DeSena notched RBIs for Iowa.

HOW IT HAPPENED  

San Diego scored their lone run of the game in the first inning, set up by a single, a wild pitch and a second single.

Iowa tied the game after Klosterman doubled to lead off the third inning. Carter singled and Banes singled, scoring Klosterman from third.

Iowa took the lead in the fourth inning. Sophomore Marissa Peek was hit by a pitch, and sophomore Zoe Schulte came in to run for her, advancing to third after back-to-back wild pitches. DeSena grounded out allowing Schulte to score.

Iowa added an insurance run in the fifth inning after Carter singled and Banes was hit by a pitch. Junior Kalena Burns moved them over with a sacrifice bunt. Carter then came home to score on a wild pitch.

NOTABLES 

  • The Hawkeyes moved to 6-2 on the season.
  • Loecker recorded her third career win in the circle.
